Chapter sixteen

“You are getting Evvy exercise, right?” Sarson asked in a lazy tone.

The words startled Doli, and her eyes fluttered open. Apparently she’d been napping.

Sort of. Maybe. She wasn’t fully admitting to anything.

Sarson’s cottage was so warm and cozy. Several lanterns flickered on the wall, spreading a honeyed hue across the library and beyond. He also made her feel incredibly comfortable in his home.

The warnings Jez had given her were just Jez being Jez. Maybe she was even a little jealous.

The Gargoyle still sat thumbing through a book and drinking what should have been his second cup of green matcha, but Doli’s brain was foggy, so she wasn’t sure.

He either hadn’t noticed her dozing or didn’t mind because he’d said nothing about it. “It says here that baby Dragons need several hours of entertainment and exercise a day.”

The pair sat in Sarson’s library chairs. Before they’d begun their research, he’d fashioned a snug little bed on the floor for the still-sleeping Dragon. Doli was glad Evvy had been napping for so long, although she had a nagging annoyance in the back of her mind that she needed to get back to town. It was nearly the lunch hour according to the clock in Sarson’s living room, and she was sure her parents would be looking for her to help check off all the boxes on her mother’s list . . . another reason she hadn’t minded drowsiness dragging her own eyes down.

If only for a second or two.

Doli furrowed her brow and blinked away the languor. “Taenya and possibly Jez played some games with her, and then there’s all that flying around the bakery . . . mostly eating, really.” She paused for a moment. “But no. I’m not sure how to get her much exercise in my apartment or in town with so many onlookers. Plus, what if she escaped?”

“You could bring her here,” the Gargoyle offered. “There’s plenty of space, and it’s far enough away from town that I receive few visitors. And there’s a nearby pond. I’m sure she’d love it since Dragons are natural swimmers. We could have a picnic.”

The Dwarf hadn’t read that Dragons liked water. Is he really asking me out here again? And is it like a date? Her stomach gave a little shimmer at the possibility.

Doli thought for a second, then said, “Arleta and Theo have a fairly large property they share with the Orcs, too. I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before.” She smiled, and the expression felt good. “Did you find anything else on Fervour Dragons and their caregiver bonds?”

“While you were asleep?” He chuckled lightly without looking up from the book.

Apparently he had noticed Doli dozing.

The sting of awkwardness poked at Doli’s stomach, but she used it as a prompt to sit straight and say, “Yes. While I was napping, did you find any other useful information?”

He looked up this time, and his lips quirked up halfway. The expression made Doli nearly melt right into her chair.
